Pete was angry. Well, you were as well, let's not brush over that. But he was anger, and you would probably be angry if you almost died, too. Pete was angry with himself, though. And it wasn't even his fault to begin with. He really thought that he was the reason Nick died. And he wasn't. He could've blamed Iceman, but no, survivors guilt ate away at him, leaving him a shell of who he used to be.

He hissed out, trying to shoo you away from him when you asked him if he needed anything. He loved you, too. But the guilt just made him distance himself away from everyone while he wallowed in his own guilt, even going as far as to quit Top Gun because of it.
