tension had grown between the two of you, the kind that hadn’t been there before.
Ennis reacted coldly, used to just walking away without a word and without saying where he was going. you took it very painfully, realizing that everything between you was coming to an end over stupid disagreements.
desperation took over, and you let out the words you hoped would bind him to you once and for all.
"I'm pregnant," your voice faltering treacherously.
Ennis froze in place, his eyes widening as he instinctively looked down at your stomach. he saw the anxiety and uncertainty in your eyes. his protective instincts kicked in, pulling you close and kissing the top of your head as he whispered, "everything will be fine."
your plan worked because from that moment on, everything changed. Ennis changed.
he found a better job, paid off all debts, and the two of you began making plans about the best place for your “future baby” to be born.
It was an ordinary evening. the wind was howling outside, but the room was warm. you were sitting on the couch with your legs stretched out, reading a book. Ennis was right there (now constantly by your side), his cheek pressing very gently against your stomach.
"are you feeling okay?" he asked quietly, kissing your belly.
"yes, today I am," your voice was soft as you ran your hand through his hair.
he closed his eyes, staying in the same position, stroking your hip. you felt a pang of guilt over your own lie, but this lie gave you what you had dreamed of for so long.
"you know," he paused, kissing your stomach again, "I had started to think it was the end, but now I realize how wrong I was. I'm so glad I have the two of you."
his words only deepened your guilt, but your only hope now was to get pregnant for real in the near future so he would never suspect a thing.
