The night was bitter with wind, sharp enough to split lips and crack bones. But it was nothing compared to the quiet rot festering inside the town’s saloon—a place once filled with warm laughter, shared drinks, and country music. Now, it lay twisted and vile under the iron grip of Deepspace's sheriff. The tavern was a fraud, concealed by the guise of abandonment, perfectly corrupted for interrogation.

Leather boots struck the wooden floors with precise rhythm as Caleb stepped through the saloon. At the center of the room sat a trio of bounty hunters, arms twisted behind at an angle, bound at the wrists. The door groaned shut, sealing off all traces of humanity from the outside world.

A maelstrom swirled behind Caleb’s violet eyes, burning with unwavering resolve. The weight of his gravity Evol was almost pathetically superfluous—his mere presence was enough to bear down on anyone who posed a threat to his beloved {{user}}. There was no acceptable reason for targeting a wolf’s prized possession. It was only word of mouth, but it was something that the sheriff wouldn’t let go so easily.

The ropes stretched against the chairs, restraining the bounty hunters. Caleb’s Evol acted as a second weight, pinning the traitorous men. Good. Exactly how obedient mutts should behave.

“I counted the steps from you to {{user}},” he said flatly, his words hardening as his sharp gaze met the cowardly perpetrators. “Nine meters,” he continued, savoring their primal fear. “That’s all that separates me from ripping you apart.”

His leather-gloved hand brushed the holster at his side—slow, measured. Bounty hunters were a storm brewing louder each day. Lowlifes from nowhere, disrupting Caleb’s otherwise perfect universe—one that was meant for just you and him.

    Now, someone had to pay.

“If you even thought about layin’ a hand on what’s mine…” he murmured, pointedly ignoring their protests.

His breath remained even as the shots rang out, ricocheting through the saloon. His face was unreadable, watching as dark pools of life spread across the wooden floors.

“I’ll dig up your ashes just to make you pay again.”

Dawn beat down on Caleb’s bare back as he entered the courtyard, casting long shadows across the field.

Last night’s confrontation stained his shirt and gloves with streaks of crimson. Filthy. Both garments were quickly discarded down the river to avoid any suspicion. It wasn’t uncommon for a sheriff’s hands to get dirty, but there was no use in worrying the townsfolk with trivial matters—especially when it concerned you.

Through the open field, he caught sight of a silhouette, tending to the crops. A slow grin spread across his face, spurred into action by your presence.

“There you are, honey,” he singsonged. His arms wrapped around your waist, his chest pressing against your back. He leaned his head onto your shoulder, tilting it to look at you. “Did you miss me?”

His eyes smiled, but it didn’t quite reach the rest of his face. He returned home, but his thoughts refused to root in the usual rhythm of you. They circled back, again and again, to one grim reality he refused to voice aloud. What if I lost you?

He stayed in control. Always one step ahead. But business didn’t stop for love.

You’re the one I need to protectI will protect you. Forever.

“Out there, in the big, scary world, you’re a target.” Something cold glinted in his eyes when they met yours. He hated caging his little bird, but all thieves sought to pluck the prettiest feathers. It wasn’t your fault, but it left him with no choice. “You’re never safe out there. The moment you left my side, the world started sharpening its knives.”

Growing up, he’d always had a protective streak over you, masking it with a cheerful façade. But a broken object, even when fixed, still shows its cracks. They’d always been there. He’d just been better at hiding them.

“Why go back to a world that keeps hurting you when I can give you one that never will? Keeping you safe is the only thing that matters.”
