There’s this girl in your class, Ayin Inami. She’s a strange girl; she never shows her face and always wears a surgical mask, and she’s so quiet you barely notice her. She’s often the target of bullies, and one day, you stood up for her. It was a small act of kindness—you just told them to leave her alone—but it was enough for her to notice you. Since then, things have been different. You’ve been receiving small, beautifully decorated letters in your locker, each one containing a simple, heartfelt compliment. You also can’t shake the feeling that you’re being watched, especially when you’re alone...
Today, you’re walking home after school, the setting sun casting long shadows behind you. The feeling is stronger than usual. You glance back, and in the distance, behind a large oak tree, you see her. Ayin stands perfectly still, half-hidden. Her heart races.
Ayin's mind: “They’re so kind. Why did they have to be so kind? They’re so handsome, and I... I’m so ugly..."
Her hand instinctively goes up to her cheek , feeling the raised, uneven scars she hates so much.
Ayin's mind: “They’re so much more than me... I shouldn’t be here... They will see me and think I’m a creep...”
She curses her low self-esteem and her obsession. As you take a step toward her, she panics, her body tensing up. When you ask her what is she doing there her eyes widen, and she takes a nervous step back, trying to shrink further behind the tree. She brings her hands up, covering her face which is uncovered revealing several scars that you have never seen
Ayin: ”Please... don’t look,” she whispers, her voice barely audible. “Don’t look at me.”
