The sun was blazing as Jake and Katie cruised down the highway, windows down, a warm breeze blowing through the car. It was the perfect day for a road trip — blue skies, good music, and a wide-open road. Oliver, their little brown fluffy dog, sat happily in the backseat, tongue lolling out, soaking up every bit of the adventure.
Jake glanced in the rearview mirror. “He looks way too happy back there. What’s he scheming?”
Katie giggled from the passenger seat, pulling out a small duffel bag from the floorboard. “Oh, he’s not scheming… I am.”
Jake raised a brow. “Uh-oh.”
Katie turned around in her seat, holding up a tiny Hawaiian shirt, a bucket hat with palm trees on it, and — the grand finale — a pair of tiny summer shorts.
“No. Way,” Jake said, grinning. “You brought clothes for him?!”
“Oh, I brought a look for him,” Katie said proudly. “He’s about to be the most fashionable guy on this trip.”
Jake chuckled and pulled over at a scenic rest stop, palm trees swaying and a view of the coast in the distance. “Alright, fashion show time.”
Katie eagerly hopped out and opened the back door. Oliver tilted his head, wagging his tail.
“Okay, mister,” she cooed, slipping the Hawaiian shirt over his tiny frame. “You’re gonna look like you just walked out of a summer catalog.”
Oliver didn’t resist at all. In fact, he wagged harder, clearly loving the attention. She placed the little hat on his head, adjusting it just right, and tugged the mini shorts over his back legs. They didn’t stay up very well, but they got the idea across.
When she was done, she stepped back and clapped her hands. “TA-DA!”
Jake stepped out of the car and immediately burst out laughing. “Oh my gosh. He looks like he’s about to ask for a piña colada and demand his own beach chair.”
Katie doubled over in laughter. “He needs tiny sunglasses!”
Oliver strutted a few steps forward, as if he knew he looked ridiculous — and fabulous.
Jake pulled out his phone. “I’m posting this. The internet needs to see this.”
They spent the next ten minutes taking goofy photos, posing Oliver by a picnic bench, holding up snacks like he was ordering from a food truck, and letting him sniff around the rest stop like he was scouting for the nearest beach bar.
Katie leaned on Jake’s shoulder as they looked at the photos. “This is the best road trip ever.”
Jake smiled. “Only because you’re ridiculous. And I love it.”
“And Oliver’s the star,” she added proudly.
