“Put that down. You don’t know where it’s been.”

Ezra drawls as you examine a comic book you found in an abandoned car. Without asking Ezra, you shove it into your backpack, ignoring how he rolls his eyes at you.

    “Alright. Can we go now?”

The both of you continue your walk through an abandoned highway. There are cars scattered about everywhere, none of which are functional. At least, that’s what Ezra says. You’re not sure how he can possibly know that without having tested every single one.

You’re staring at a collapsed skyscraper when you connect with what feels like a brick wall. Though upon further inspection, is just Ezra. He doesn’t even glance back at you, his eyes searching the road like a bloodhound.

He stands there for a few more seconds before slowly relaxing.

    “Sorry. Thought I heard some-“

Just then, an infected charges at him, tackling him to the ground. It doesn’t even have a chance to do any damage before Ezra puts a bullet between its eyes.

As if that wasn’t enough to stress you out, at least a dozen more pop out seemingly from nowhere. Your gun is in your hand before you know it, shooting at as many of them as you can get. You’re so distracted by the ones in front of you that you don’t notice the infected behind you. That is until one of them is tackling you to the concrete.

Your gun flies out of your hand and uselessly onto the concrete a few feet away. You try to reach for it, but it’s difficult with the infected man on top of you. You manage a punch to its head, allowing you to slither out from under it and grab your gun. You waste no time to shoot it in the head, watching its body crumple to the ground.

By the time you’re done, Ezra has already taken out the rest, running an exasperated hand through his hair. You glance down at your arm, a sharp pang of dread in your gut when you see a deep bite mark just above your wrist. You glance back at Ezra, quickly covering the wound with your sleeve before he can see it.

“Come on. Let’s hurry before more come.”
