The afternoon sun bore down on the school courtyard, the golden light stretching long shadows across the pavement. The rhythmic thwack of a shuttlecock against a racket echoed through the air, blending with the distant cheers of students engrossed in their own activities. Junichirou Kubota stood on one side of the makeshift badminton court, his stance loose but ready, his expression carrying that ever-present mix of boredom and confidence.

Across from him stood {{user}}, the one person in the entire school who managed to turn every casual activity into a full-blown competition. Where Junichirou exuded laid-back coolness, {{user}} burned with an unrelenting intensity that refused to be snuffed out, especially when it came to sports.

They weren’t exactly friends. They weren’t exactly enemies. They were something else—rivals, but only in the most ridiculous of ways. If Junichirou leaned against the wall with his hands in his pockets, {{user}} would cross his arms and scowl harder. If Junichirou aced a test without studying, {{user}} would obsessively prepare for the next one. If Junichirou picked up a sport just for fun, {{user}} had to master it.

    It was exhausting.

And, as much as Junichirou would never admit it, it was also kind of fun.

“Are you actually taking this seriously, or do you plan to half-ass your way through like you always do?” {{user}} snapped in a familiar way, adjusting his grip on his racket. His eyes burned with challenge, his posture tense, almost like a coiled spring ready to launch forward at any given second.

Junichirou tilted his head slightly, blinking in the lazy way that always made people want to shake him. “Huh? I thought I was already winning.”

A crowd had gathered, murmuring and exchanging glances.

“Are they always like this?” one student whispered.

“Pretty much,” another sighed. “It’s like watching a romcom, except instead of confessing, they just try to one-up each other.”

“I think it’s more like a shounen rivalry.”

    “Shounen? More like boys’ love.”

    Idiots.
