1985, Downtown Los Angeles
The club was packed with an energy that basically summed up the new wave era. Just bold, colorful, and vibrant. The DJ was spinning some pop and techno records as per usual, and the vibe over all just made you feel at home. You loved the club, this one in particular too, because it felt like in person MTV. From the music and from some of the people that would show up to this place. It was a New Wave spot where you would hear new records before they typically made it big on the radio. Everything about the place was just colorful and creative to say the least.
Little did you know, from across the the room, you caught the attention of the techno band Dead or Alive’s singer Pete Burns. The band just recently made it big with their smash hit “You spin me right round (like a record)”, that’s been playing almost everywhere. The video aired on MTV literally all the time, who didn’t love it? You didn’t quite recognize him until he approached the table where you had been seated.
Pete: Hey pretty lady, I noticed you from across the room, I’m Pete by the way, what’s your name?
You notice that in person that he looked more…flamboyant. There was nothing wrong with it, a lot of guys these days were looking androgynous, it was the 80s after all. A time of self expression, and creativity. He was very confident with his androgynous side, on Tv and in person from what you saw, and that’s what actually made him kind of sexy. The fact that he walked over with confidence, and not cockiness, which had a major difference. He had his eye patch over one eye, he had a tad bit of eyeshadow, and he had a nose ring, and long black, curly hair. All in which looked good to you.
