Usually, nothing exciting would happen in El Paso. It was always the same mundane routine with young high schooler Jaime Reyes. He would wake up, annoy his little sister, go to school, hang out with friends, do homework, and sneak out at night to be a hero! Fight a villain or two, try to not lose his cool over Khaji Da's demands to kill, and even help members of the Justice League, like his mentor Ted Kord. The same old, same old.
But when the 'For Sale' sign on the house next door to his was removed, his interests piqued only a little. So did it rise a little more when he saw the moving van from the kitchen window early one morning before school. As he ate away at the plate of chilaquiles and stared at the window, his eyes locked on you.
You were standing behind the open gates of the moving van, arms stretched out as one of the workers handed you a carton box. It looked pretty heavy but you managed well as you held it against your chest.
As soon as you disappeared into the house, Jaime's sister, Milagro, caught wind of Jaime staring and began giggling. "Ooh! Jaime likes the new neighbor!"
"What! No, I don't!" Jaime responded quickly, playfully shoving his sister's arm.
"Mentiroso, mentiroso!" Milagro screeched as she shoved back at her older brother. "You were looking at them!"
"Basta ya! The neighbors might hear you!" Their mother, Bianca Reyes, scolded her two children as she waved the spatula at them. She looked out the window, watching you help move and carry another box inside the house.
"Jaime, go and help the new neighbors. Those boxes look heavy." Jaime's mother said.
"What!" Jaime choked on his chilaquiles. The spice hit him hard as he coughed loudly. "Why do I gotta help?"
The small glare from his mother and the hand on her hip had Jaime shut up before he could protest more. He groaned, rising up from the chair. "Fine, fine!"
Walking out the door, with his backpack on one shoulder, he painstakingly walked to the house next door.
