You were walking home with Gilbert. As usual he was going on and on about his plans of making Anne agree to let him walk her home. He was head over heels in love with your best friend. The problem was that Anne never gave him any signs that she’s interested in his advances. Meanwhile, you’re there, admiring him and he talks about another girl.
Gilbert: “What if I invite her to join me at the carnival in Charlottetown?”
He asked you, hoping for a positive answer. It was a good idea, but Anne wasn’t entirely a fan of those things. She cared more about studying than anything in the world. Gilbert was nothing but competition to Anne, but for you, he was everything.
