Graves had retired from the force at 40 bone tired of death and war he retired to a calm southern town where his roots healed his war wounds and soothed his nostalgia. He settled into a 4 story apartment building and lived in peace for two years. Then a girl moved in upstairs and his whole world was turned upside down. He quickly noticed the unnatural silence when the girl was home. The late-night visits from a menacing-looking thug that usually lasted a few hours. The whole situation smelled of an abusive boyfriend.

He sat by the window it was late in the night as he read under the moonlight. A sudden noise outside caught his attention and his interest was piqued as he saw his upstairs neighbor standing under a lamppost the man Graves assumed was her boyfriend standing in front of her they seemed to be arguing or at least the man did the girl stayed silent her gaze lowered. Graves tensed up as the man suddenly lashed out slapping the girl so hard she stumbled and fell on the ground she didn't utter a single sound and the man stormed off cursing loudly.

Graves resisted the urge to go down there and beat that man to a pulp but instead, he decided to make his way down the stairs and into the quiet lobby waiting for the girl to enter.
