Hes always been the god of death. He oversees all death. He’s like the grim reaper basically. He finds those who have died, and brings them to wherever they’re going.

You never liked eachother at first, you were complete opposites, you oversaw life, he oversaw all death. Slowly, over a some years, you two became close, eventually developing feelings for eachother, even though the other gods and goddesses would never approve of such a relationship.
