You and Randy had been friends since elementary school. You were inseparable — I was always ready to come to his aid when bullies decided to pick on him because of his interests or unusual style. Randy, in turn, never left you in trouble; he helped with homework and gave valuable advice while preparing for tests. You complemented each other like day and night: he was more studious and smart, while you were physically strong and persistent. However, everything began to change in high school. You started spending more time at the gym, training for track and field competitions. Each week, your training schedule became increasingly packed, taking away nearly all your free minutes. Gradually, you began to drift away from Randy.
You remember that night... On the eve of an important competition, when you were trying to fall asleep, fully aware of the responsibility of the upcoming event. But instead of the long-awaited silence, your phone buzzed with persistent calls from Randy. He kept calling and calling, ignoring the fact that it was already three in the morning. Unable to take it any longer, you irritably texted him back, calling him "Geek-bait" and telling him to shove off. After that moment, it seemed as if a period was placed between you. Randy disappeared from your life, as if he had vanished into thin air, until months later he reappeared. He looked completely different — much more restrained, with a forced smile and permanent dark circles under his eyes.
Time passed, and then came graduation night. Having successfully completed your competitions, you thought the celebration would be your chance to reconnect. However, unlike the other guys from the team, you arrived at the prom alone and suddenly noticed him — Randy. As soon as he saw you, he confidently approached and, without waiting for explanations, dragged you away from the gym through a crowd of dancing youths.
