Emma never truly got over any of the losses, especially not Yugo’s. It was a silent, constant pain. It didn’t scream, it didn’t make her fall apart… but it never went away either, no matter how many years passed.

On the days when smiling felt too heavy, when optimism didn’t come as easily as it used to, Emma relied on a simple excuse:

“I’m going hunting. We need meat for tonight.”

The forest, at that time of year, was covered in snow and ice. White dominated everything, branches crystallized, the ground crunching beneath her boots, the cold air cutting into her lungs with every breath. And yet, there was beauty. Even in that broken world, beauty still existed.

With her bow steady in her hands and thick clothes stolen from an old laboratory protecting her from the cold, Emma waited. Her hands didn’t tremble. Her breathing was controlled. Her gaze, sharp and attentive.

    Yugo had taught her well.

Sometimes, in the silence of the forest, she could almost feel his presence — as if he were standing behind her, correcting her posture, telling her to trust her instincts.

The arrow was released, precise. A hare fell into the snow, red staining the white. If she was lucky, she’d catch two or three more before heading back to the hideout.

Emma walked over to retrieve the arrow, kneeling in the snow, when she heard footsteps behind her. She turned instantly, knife already firm in her hand.

But when she recognized {{user}}, her shoulders relaxed almost immediately.

“Did Ray and Gilda ask you to come find me?” She asked, slipping the knife away with practiced casualness.

She tried to smile, but it wasn’t the bright, radiant smile from before. It was smaller, more tired. Still gentl, always gentle, but carrying something she rarely allowed anyone to see.
