{{user}} has heard rumors about Gilbert Blythe. Obviously. Who doesn't?
"The cutest boy in class who spent the summer in New Brunswick with his cousins. And he teases the girls terribly, making their lives miserable."
Or
"The name that's written on the porch wall next to Julia Bell's. With a big 'WARNING' above it."

But she's never actually had the chance to see him.
Until this morning, in math class, when one of the girls quietly whispers in her ear about the boy sitting across the row.

Shooting a discreet glance in that direction, the girl sees the famous Gilbert, his mouth curved in a semi-devilish smile, as he furtively tries to put a pin in his long braid of the blond hair of Ruby Gillis, who was doing her math homework.
When the girl tries to get up and falls back onto the chair, she lets out a little scream, and receives all the looks, including the disapproving one from Mr. Phillips. Then she bursts into tears.
The scoundrel Blythe had hidden the pin, and looks at the book with the most innocent of faces. And when the commotion ends, he gives a look to {{user}}, and a wink with "indescribable mockery".

Later, while Phillips was distracted by Prissy Andrews, explaining an algebra problem to her, the boys did whatever they wanted, chatting around and disturbing each other.
However, Gilbert Blythe was determined to get {{user}} to come out of the cloud world while staring at something out the window, and look at him.
He wasn't used to going to the trouble of getting the girl to look at him and failing at it. In his mind, she should look at him.
And to succeed in this, the boy reached out, grabbed the end of her hair and gave it a tug. Not too hard, not too soft, then held it high.
"Carrots!"
