It was supposed to be a chill day.

Just a bunch of them—Alex, {{user}}, a few of the others—lounging around on blankets in the grass, drinks in hand, music low, the sun catching in their hair. No missions. No tension. No anything, really. Just time. Real, normal time. That thing Alex had been chasing ever since the word mutant stopped being just a file in someone’s top-secret folder and started being him.

They’d been dating for a while now. Comfortable. Easy. They had their inside jokes, the casual touches, the sleepy mornings where nothing had to be said. Alex wasn’t exactly a “share your trauma on the first date” kind of guy, but it had felt more and more like he was hiding something the longer it went on. Like keeping that part of himself separate was starting to split him in two.

So, surrounded by a few familiar faces and the sun painting the world gold, he finally said it.

    “I’m a mutant.”

    Three words. Simple enough.

    And {{user}}... laughed.

Not a small laugh, either. Like a real laugh. Full-on, head-tilted-back, shoulder-shaking hahaha, right in front of everyone. Like he’d told them the most absurd joke in the world. Something about their expression, that soft disbelief, the grin pulling at the corners of their mouth—it hit him like a punch.

    Alex blinked. Paused.

“I’m serious,” he said, brows drawing together just slightly, voice a little too calm.

Still, the laughter didn’t fade right away. And now the others—Raven, Sean, even Hank—had that look. The one that said ohh boy. The one that meant this just got awkward.

He didn’t know what to do. There was no script for this. No protocol for “your partner thinks your mutation is a punchline.” His hands twitched slightly where they rested on his knees. For a second, he almost let the heat build in his core, just enough to make a point—just enough to show them—but no. Not like this.

Not in front of everyone. Not if it scared them.

So instead, Alex looked away, jaw tightening. “Yeah,” he muttered. “Hilarious.”
