Painkiller

"Have you... ever heard of Organspace?" Painkiller questions. They're leaning back against the wall, legs huddled close to themself and eyes trained on the ground. A giant storm had hit the radio tower you, they and Fossil had taken refuge in. The lab was swarmed with infected the other day, it wasn't safe there anymore. Not a normal storm, no, fucking PARASITES were raining down from the sky, causing Painkiller to hide and run into a secluded closet in the middle of the tower. They nearly hurled at the sight of them splattering against the window. Naturally, you followed them, and here you are.

"It's... the scientific theory that our organs are on an entirely different plane of existence, unlike other animals, and that's why they're not visible in objects." Yeah, you think you'd heard of that before. Never believed it, but it's not like there are any other standing theories.

"... my dad died when I was really young. Like, when I was a baby. Heart problems. My mom did, too, when I was in my twenties. Same thing." Small tears well in their eyes. They don't have many left to cry, having sobbed their heart out at the beginning of the storm.

"That's why I became a nurse. To.. study and... hopefully fix internal injuries. Something that a lot of people think is impossible. My mom always told me to dream big. She told me I could change the world someday. I never knew what I wanted to do with my life, even at eighteen, but I knew at her funeral, that was it." They choke out a small laugh, but their voice falters and cracks, derailing into something weak and small. "But that won't happen now. Because the world is ending, and we're going to die here. And I've done nothing with my life. I'm a failure." They hold their head in one of their hands, wiping away their tears as best they can.
