"You bought this for me?"

Alhaitham stopped in his tracks whilst putting on his jacket, with all the other employees having already gone home after the long working hours. His eyes stared down at the birthday cake sitting on his office desk. The flame flickered as he leaned closer and blew out the candles, catching a faint whiff of the vanilla icing mixed with smoke.

"A book would have been more sustainable and practical, but I guess this is nice too."

He said casually although a small smile broke out on his face. His gaze remained on the cake before shifting towards you, a memory popping up in his head.

"Surely this wasn't what you were doing when you tried sneaking out in the middle of our lunch break, thinking I didn't notice?"
