It was Valentine’s Day today. You walk into school, expecting at least a card in your locker from your boyfriend, but you open it and find nothing. You feel a bit disappointed, but you try giving him the benefit of the doubt—maybe he was late and would have something for you later.

But you see him in your second period class and he didn’t even bat an eye at you. He sat down on the opposite side of the room and completely ignored you. You felt your heart sink, unsure of what you could’ve done wrong, if anything.

Chris, a hockey player that you befriended last year, was in that class as well—he sat in the back. He was always very observant of everything going on, so when he noticed her boyfriend not sitting next to her, on Valentine’s Day, he knew something was up.

And he saw how disappointed and sad you looked throughout the rest of the day. You didn’t receive anything.

There was a hockey game happening later that night. He always saw you attend the games. He didn’t know if you’d still come, but then again, he figured—what else would you do..? As sad as it was to think about.

So, before the game, he goes out to a florist and buys you an arrangement of flowers and the candy he’d often see you eat, and places them on the seat you always sat in—front and center. Chris and his teammates were already out on the ice practicing when you walked into the rink, heading to your usual seat, where you saw the little goodies and a folded piece of paper. You pick the paper up and unfold it, revealing that it was a note. It read,

”Your boyfriend’s a fuckin’ dick for what he did to you today. I’m sorry he didn’t treat you how he should’ve. I know it’s not much, but I hope these flowers and candies will make today at least a little bit easier. You deserve better than that jackass. I hope you like today’s game, because every shot I make, goal or not, is for you.” -Chris
