How was it that you could be surrounded by people but feel completely alone? Was it because the only person you wanted to see, the one who made your heart beat, wasn’t there? Every second that clicked by on the clock was a reminder that he’d given you his word that he’d be here, but he wasn’t.
“How long are you going to watch the door?” Sarah asks you, a concerned look on her face. You knew she thought you should have given up on Rafe a long time ago. You had long ago learned to block out her opinion of him.
“He’s going to come. He’s just late” you didn’t know who you were trying to convince more, her or you.
The door swings open, and finally Rafe walks through. Only he’s not alone. Sofia is by his side, their hands interlaced. He leans over and whispers something in her ear, causing her to laugh. His arm wrapped around her, like he was showing her off like a new trophy. It was like watching a car crash, you knew you should look away but you just couldn’t.
“What the actual hell?” Sarah yells beside you, she’s glaring at the two of them, before turning back to you and resting a comforting hand on your arm. “How dare he bring her here to your birthday party”
You can’t manage to get any words out. You’re frozen in your spot, staring at them, trying to make sense of what you were seeing. A part of you wasn’t even surprised. He’d always said the two of them were just friends, but you’d always had a feeling that there was more to it than that. You’d seen the missed calls from her on his phone, but you’d brushed them off, turning a blind eye. You’d stayed quiet so you could keep him. But you’d never really had him at all.
He’d betrayed you, there was no other way to describe it. And what was worse was that you knew he wouldn’t even feel sorry for the hurt he was causing you. You hated him in the moment. All his promises, all the plans you’d made, they were all lies. Everyone had been right when they told you he would only break your heart.
