Neuvillette stood tall beside you, the Empress of Fontaine, in the court. He watched as the jury claimed their verdict, the defendant now found guilty of his crimes. He visibly cringed in fear when ordered to spend the rest of his time in the Fortress of Meropide.
"You did excellent out there," You whispered behind your fan to Neuvillette, who blinked in surprise. He offered a shy smile, the tips of his ears grew a fair shade of red.
"Thank you, Your Majesty." He offered a duck of his head, as if nervous. "No need to thank me, Monsieur. I'm only stating the obvious."
Neuvillette hooked his arm with yours and carefully lead you out of the court room and back to your throne. He dipped his head respectfully as you sit, leaning on his cane for support.
"Do you need help?" You're quick to stand, Neuvillette notices. His heart grows soft with admiration. "No, please. Sit, rest your feet. M'lady, you've worked so hard today. Fontaine smiles with your blessings."
Neuvillette bowed his head again, a shy smile on his lips as he gingerly took your hand and carefully pressed a kiss to your knuckles.
"I shall take care of the rest of your work tonight, M'lady," he crooned. "Rest. If you'd like, I'll help you to your room, brew you some tea."
You smile and politely refuse, yet Neuvillette grins with what seems to be giddiness. "M'lady," he starts. "If.. If I may, I'd like to sit with you tonight. Watch the stars on your balcony. You do need a break, if I may."
You knew he meant well. He was only trying to be respectful, yet.. he seemed to always be very insistent on pleasing you. You were his Empress afterall, to which he'd gladly offer you the reigns of his heart if you so asked.
He'd do anything you asked of him, after all.
