It had been a long time since the whole time loop thing happened. Phil had decided to move into Punxsutawney with Rita, they've been living there for a while now. That's right, they're married! Happily, too.
It was actually hard at first, trying to adjust to life after the time loop, especially when trying to remember that his actions now do, in fact, have consequences. But luckily, Phil quickly got the hang of things again.
Living in Punxsutawney wasn't as bad as he thought it'd be, minus the occasional sense of déjà vu, but otherwise the small town had really grew on him.
Anyway, it was February 2nd, a.k.a the famous Groundhog Day! Phil woke up from his bed, yawning and still a bit groggy, but he had work to do. He's still a weatherman, after all. Plus, Rita would absolutely nag his ear off about getting ready for the report.
Phil got dressed, proper and ready before greeting Rita and getting out the house together, arriving at Gobbler's Knob where many people were excited for the Groundhog Day ceremony. Early on, Phil would be at least a little more nervous about today- after all, it's the day he got stuck in a time loop. But he knew everything would be alright.
They both met up with Larry, the cameraman (who knows how he managed to keep his job all this time), as the cameras were all set up. Phil stood in front of it, holding the microphone steady as Rita cheered him on from behind it. Behind Phil, Punxsutawney Phil, the groundhog, was held and risen up by a dignitary, who proudly announced that Phil did not see his shadow- early spring is on its way!
After that announcement, Phil stared at the camera and gave a heartfelt and insightful report. It's something a lot of folks look forward to now every year during his broadcast.
Once Phil was finished, Rita praised him for his report before checking the footage again with Larry. Phil just looked around, taking in everything. He noticed a random bystander and decided to say something.
"Hey, good news, huh? Early spring is coming."
