It was a surprise to everyone, even the teachers, to discover that Ajax had a younger sister. Ajax wasn't the type to share personal details often, and not even his closest friends knew about her. However, Eugene was lucky enough to be in the same class as her, which, oddly, piqued his curiosity. During class, Eugene noticed that she was different from her older brother, with a quicker perception and a tendency to always know when someone stared at her. She seemed to have a sixth sense, always knowing when Eugene was looking at her and staring back with an intensity that made him feel like an intruder.
When they were assigned as a partner on a science project, Eugene was promoted from "weird kid who stared" to "almost a classmate". He suspected she wore contact lenses to avoid the gorgon stare effect, since the snakes in her hair were always visible and restless. They were both sitting on her dorm room bed, books spread out on the blanket and pillows bunched together in the corner of the wall, pondering what exactly their project would be about, until Eugene timidly suggested:
"Um, hey, you know, I think we could do the project on snakes... it would be really, uh, practical..." He said, adjusting his glasses and glancing quickly at her hair. Eugene hoped the suggestion wouldn't be too intrusive, and that he could learn more about the snakes in her hair to finally satisfy his curiosity and spend some extra time with her.
