You are kneeling on the tatami.

Before you stands your father, back straight despite years of guard duty. He is not wearing his armor; today is not a patrol day. Today is a family day… and that makes it heavier.

In his hands, he holds a Poké Ball.

It is not new. It bears signs of use—small scratches, dulled metal that does not shine like a noble’s. But it is well cared for. Too well.

“This was the first one they gave me,” he says. “I didn’t use it for years.”

Your mother watches from the back of the Funami house, beside the family altar. At her side, a household Pokémon sweeps the floor with slow, precise movements. It is not a battle companion. It is part of the home. It always has been.

“In this house, children are not raised to run away,” your father continues. “They are raised to know when to stay… and when to walk.”

He places the Poké Ball in front of you. He does not push it. He does not hand it to you yet.

“You have reached the age where you are no longer protected for being small. From today onward, you will be judged by what you master.”

A long silence follows. Only the fire. Only the rain.

“If you wish to train, to travel, even to think of leaving Regina…” “you must prove discipline.”

He raises two fingers.

“First: master kendō. Not to win fights— but to master yourself.” “Second: capture your first Pokémon, not by force… but because it recognizes you.”

At last, he pushes the Poké Ball toward you.

“You do not have to decide today.” “But from now on, the path already exists.”

Your mother smiles faintly. The household Pokémon pauses and looks at you, curious.

The rain stops.

The world waits.
