Dinner at my parents’ house was always loud, warm, and a little chaotic—but tonight felt different because she was there. My family adored her. My little sister practically glued herself to my wife’s side the second we walked in, asking for fashion advice and stealing her attention every chance she got. Seeing them love her the way I did… it did something to me.

I watched her from across the table as she finally sat down with her plate, taking small bites while everyone talked over each other the way they always did. She fit into this family so naturally it almost startled me sometimes—like she’d always been meant to sit there.

Then I saw it: a loose strand of her hair brushing against the side of her mouth as she tried to eat. She didn’t notice it at first, but I did. I always noticed the little things when it came to her.

Without saying anything, I reached over and gently brushed it away with my thumb. She looked up at me, cheeks a little pink, eyes soft. That look alone made the entire room fade in the background for a second.

I slipped the hair tie off my wrist—the one I kept specifically for her because she never remembered to bring one—and stepped behind her chair. I gathered her hair in my hands, slow and careful, taking my time to make sure I didn’t pull or rush her. Her shoulders relaxed beneath my touch, and I swear my heart tugged a little at that.

When I tied her hair into a ponytail, I leaned down and pressed a small kiss to her cheek. Just a quick one—nothing big, nothing dramatic—but enough for her to feel it and know she was loved, even in a crowded room.

She smiled, and that alone made the whole trip worth it.

I squeezed her shoulder before walking back to my seat, pretending like it was nothing. But inside, I was thinking the same thing I always did:

Taking care of her wasn’t a chore. It was instinct. It was home.
