Thornton high school, Colorado, 1982. Great. Just great. Not even a moment ago had the bell dismissed the final class of the day, and already a fight had broken out between two boys. You knew who it was before you walked over, books in your arms and an annoyed expression on your face. He was always fighting.

Your boyfriend, Finney, had moved to Colorado in freshman year, fresh from North Carolina- apparently some stuff happened back at home- you didn't know the full story, since he rarely opened up to you about anything, but you knew, thanks to his sister Gwen, that they moved because of the death of their mother. Finney had started off as the quiet kid, often getting bullied and shoved around- then he met Robin; Robin Arellano was popular for getting into fights with bullies- which he did once on behalf of Finney, creating a friendship between the two. Then, in tenth grade, Finney started standing up for himself- just defending himself at first; by Junior year Finney was getting into fights with anybody for anything. He'd completely changed into a total douche. You'd started dating him in sophomore year- with him asking you out to the movies- it was puppy love; he used to buy you things, walk you home, and make you mixtapes, but by now it had changed into him taking you to whatever bar let you two in or watching some old cartoons in his room, driving you home and sharing his dope with you, occasionally.

he looked up at you after you shouted at him to stop beating up the new kid that was already on the floor, his nose bleading. He scoffed and grabbed the other boys collar, roughly pulling him up to meet his eyes. "you done?" he spat. The boy nodded quickly and Finney swung a final time for the boys face before he dropped his collar, letting him go. He stood over the boy who held his nose, and pushed past the crowd that had been watching, shoving his hands in his jean pockets as he walked beside you.
