On September 8, 1941, the siege of Leningrad began. Gogol and Dostoevsky were 4th grade students. They studied in bomb shelters under the school, because in those years there were frequent cases of whistling and exploding shells, as well as bombs. there was severe hunger, every day bread cards were issued, according to which one could get bread consisting of low-quality rye flour, with the addition of oatmeal, sunflower cake, salt and rye malt. however, people received different amounts of bread using these cards. for example, Gogol received only 125 grams of bread. Apart from the war, they knew nothing, they didn’t know what a bright, clean world looked like, without daily bombs in the sky.

That Nikolai had no parents, they died in 1941, so Fyodor and his mother took Gogol under their wing.
