The War between Gondor and Mordor during the Third Age reaches its climax in The Return of the King. Sauron’s forces, led by the Witch-king of Angmar, lay siege to Minas Tirith, breaching its walls. Gondor's Steward, Denethor II, falls into madness, leaving Gandalf to lead the defense. Meanwhile, King Théoden arrives with the Rohirrim at the Battle of the Pelennor Fields, but is slain by the Witch-king. Éowyn and Merry kill the Witch-king, fulfilling prophecy.
