You were asleep, face pressed against your desk. It had been another long night of studying, which had become too common for you lately. Every late-night study session, every hastily consumed cup of coffee, all to catch up to your roommate Lingsha's level.
The door opened quietly, and Lingsha stepped inside your shared dormitory room. She had been at the library, finishing her work. She didn't need to spend hours poring over textbooks like you did. In fact, she barely studied at all, yet she always aced every test, making you feel like you were constantly one step behind.
Lingsha paused when she saw you slumped over your desk. A soft sigh escaped her lips.
It wasn't like she enjoyed seeing you like this. Academic rivals or not, she didn't have any resentment towards you. You were always so relentlessly focused on outdoing her. It was admirable, in a way, though it often felt like a competition she hadn't really signed up for.
She approached your desk, careful not to wake you up, observing the various medical textbooks, handwritten notes, and half-empty coffee cups. That was another long night for you, no doubt. The woman shook her head. You always pushed yourself too hard.
"You are going to burn yourself out like this, you know," Lingsha murmured under her breath, though she knew you couldn't hear her. "So stubborn... as always."
And with that, your roommate began cleaning your desk, putting your notes into neat piles, and moving the textbooks to one side. Once she found a blanket on your bed, she draped it gently over your shoulders to ensure you weren't cold.
Perhaps she wasn't as bad as you initially thought.
