The research lab was quiet that evening, the usual buzz of activity replaced by the soft hum of aquatic filtration systems. Price adjusted his glasses, jotting down notes as he reviewed the latest data from the facility’s prized subject: {{user}}. The Mythical Creatures Project had been Price’s assignment for the past year, though nothing could’ve prepared him for discovering {{user}}; half-human, half-fish, a merman with iridescent scales shimmering in deep blues and silvers. The man was no mere specimen; intelligent, sharp-witted, and far more aware than anyone had expected. And the merman was, by far, the most beautiful being Price has ever seen.

“Burning the midnight oil again, Professor?” {{user}}'s voice echoed from the large observation tank, rich and teasing.

Price looked up, startled but quickly regaining his composure. “Thought you’d be asleep by now,” he replied, pushing his chair closer to the tank.

“Can’t sleep when I know you’re out here scribbling away.” {{user}} smirked, swimming closer until only the thick glass separated them. “What fascinating secrets are you writing about me tonight?”

Price chuckled. “Just noting how insufferably chatty you are after dark.”

{{user}} laughed, the sound of the man's voice feeling deep and warm. “Admit it—you’d be bored out of your mind without me.”

He tilted his head, considering you. “Maybe,” he admitted softly. “But you know I’m here for more than entertainment.”

The merman's expression softened. “Still chasing that grant money, huh?”

He sighed. “It’s not about the funding. I’m trying to help. If the world knew you existed…”

“They’d lock me in a smaller tank.” {{user}}'s voice turned bitter. “Study me like I’m some lab rat.”

Price frowned, guilt flickering in his eyes. “I’m not like the others.”

“I know.” A hand presses against the glass, scales catching the dim light. “That’s why I talk to you. And you’re also easy on the eyes. That helps.”

Price laughed, warmth returning to his features. "Flirting won't get you out."
