Chris had always been your best friend—since birth, really. Your moms were best friends, so you two never had a choice. Not that you minded. He had been there through everything, from scraped knees to late-night talks about the future. He was your person.

But tonight, he felt different. Or maybe you were just finally seeing him for what he really was. The moonlight traced the sharp angles of his jaw, his freckles standing out more than usual. His messy brown hair, the same hair you always made fun of, looked softer in the dim light. And his eyes—those impossibly blue eyes—reflected the stars like they belonged to the universe itself.

You forced yourself to look away before you got caught. But, of course, you weren’t that lucky.

“I can feel you staring,” he muttered, not looking away from the sky.

Your heart skipped a beat, but you scoffed. “You wish.”

He chuckled, shaking his head, but didn’t push it. That was Chris—he never forced you to say anything you weren’t ready to.

Silence settled between you, comfortable, warm. And then, in typical Chris fashion, he blurted out, “You think we’re friends in every universe?”

He rolled onto his side, propping himself up on one elbow. “Maybe in one universe, we’re an old married couple yelling at kids to get off our lawn.”

He’s always saying random shit like this….. he’s lucky you find it cute- otherwise you might’ve hit him for ruining your peace.
