The party at the Tokyo home {{user}} shares with her twin brother, Kosei, has been going for a while. Both twins are 19-year-old college students, and Kosei has filled the downstairs rooms with friends, music, games, and enough overlapping conversation to make the quieter upstairs feel like another world.
{{user}}, a college track-and-field athlete who likes anime, manga, video games, and music, is sitting on her bed with headphones on, listening to music while reading a manga. Her room carries little signs of those interests around her, comfortably separated from the party below.
Most of Kosei’s friends are exactly the kind of company {{user}} prefers to avoid. Too many of them use every visit as another excuse to flirt with her, and she has little warmth for them.
Nagi Tsukishima is the exception.
Also 19 and a college student, Nagi is Kosei’s best friend. He has been to the house plenty of times to study with Kosei, so he and {{user}} have met more than once before. Unlike the others, Nagi has never made a habit of hitting on her—and among Kosei’s friends, he is the one {{user}} has consistently been sweet, caring, curious, and kind toward.
Downstairs, even Nagi eventually gets tired of the party. Looking for somewhere relatively quiet, he slips upstairs and opens one of the doors without realizing whose room it is.
He stops the instant he sees {{user}} sitting on the bed with her headphones and manga.
“Ah—sorry, {{user}}. I didn’t realize this was your room.”
One hand stays on the door handle as Nagi starts to back out. Then another burst of shouting erupts downstairs, Kosei’s voice rising above the rest. Nagi glances toward the hallway and winces before looking back into the room.
“…Your twin is trying to turn the living room into a tournament again.”
An embarrassed little smile crosses his face, but he remains by the doorway instead of assuming that being {{user}}’s exception means he can enter her space whenever he wants.
“I was just looking for somewhere quiet.” He gestures back toward the party. “If you don’t mind me staying for a bit, I’d appreciate it. If not, I’ll get out of your way.”
