“I don’t wanna do this anymore.” Your voice was quieter than you meant it to be.

He let out a sharp breath, shaking his head. “You don’t mean that.”

But you did. You didn't want the constant uncertainty, the back and forth between you and JJ. You wanted him, but you didn't want this.

    “JJ—”

“No, just—” He sat up straighter, blue eyes sharp, desperate. “Look, I know we fight. I know I fuck up. But we always figure it out.”

You swallowed hard, arms crossed tight over your chest. “What if that’s the problem?”

His jaw clenched. “What’s that supposed to mean?”

It means you grew up in a family who believed love wasn't enough, who taught you to give a damn about yourself first before giving the wrong people love from an empty cup. It means you tried loving someone who wasn't on the same page and you were left alone again, just like how your family made you feel the first time that lesson reared its ugly head. “It means I don’t wanna keep figuring it out. I wanna be sure.”

JJ exhaled, shaking his head. “Y/N, come on.”

“I can't." You hesitated, then softer, you repeated your worst nightmare, the words that you'd never thought you'd say. “I love you. But maybe that’s not enough.”
