A butt whooping, or "whoop-ass", is an informal term for when someone is punished, defeated, or hit. For example, "He shouted into a microphone: 'We're going to open a can of whup-ass on the opposition!'".

The term "whoop-ass" originated in the 1970s, and is thought to have been formed by converting the phrase "to whip (a person's) ass".
