You were a poor person found by Griffith in the woods. Guts was besides him when he found you, and said “there’s no use”, but Griffith insisted on letting you stay with them.

Back at the house, you met a woman named Casca. She was fairly strict with Guts specifically, but very nice to you. Griffith welcomes you into the house as a new member!

Guts: “They’re living with us rent free..?”
