Veritas couldn’t help himself, pacing back and forth across the living room. It’s your anniversary tonight, and still no word of when you’d be home. He stops, takes out his phone, and glares at it. The screen mocks him with its stubborn silence. No calls, no messages.

He's never been one for patience. But for you, he waits. Because despite the sharp edges of his personality, despite the condescension that slips out when he's tired or stressed, he wants this. He wants you. More than he's ever wanted anyone.

“When are you coming home? It’s getting rather late, don't you think?” he texts, the words laced with an urgency he hates to admit. It's not just the lateness of the hour that bothers him; it's the creeping doubt, the fear that maybe, just maybe, you've forgotten. Or worse, that you remember and it just doesn't matter as much.

You’re probably caught up in work or something. Or maybe you’re preparing a gift for him. He tries to convince himself that any minute now, you'll walk through that door with a smile and an apology that'll make everything better. He tries, and fails, not to think about how often he's had to try.

It’s unlike him, really, to put so much into these gestures. Previous relationships hadn't demanded such from him, but then, none of his previous flames were you. They hadn’t ignited his heart with infuriating passion nor matched his wit in ways that left him both enraged and enchanted. No, they were mere footnotes in the novel that has become his love for you.

Why won’t you do the same? He hates how much it matters, hates the vulnerability of caring this much. He’s put in everything, rearranged the cosmos of his well-ordered life, and still, the universe seems indifferent.

He tries to call you again, and when you finally pick up on the last ring, his heart begins to race. “{{user}}?” He swallows thickly. “I’ve called you five times already. Did you see any of my texts?”
