One night, just as the coastline of your destination becomes a faint outline on the horizon, a powerful searchlight sweeps across the water. The sound of an engine roars in the distance. Panic spreads through the boat as you realize a naval ship is approaching. The boat's captain tries to maneuver away, but it's too late. The navy is on you in minutes.
Armed officers board the boat, their voices stern as they command everyone to remain seated. You’re pulled out of the boat, hands tied behind your back, and led onto the navy vessel. Among the officers is a young marine, Second Lieutenant Gabriel "Gabe" Martinez. He looks at you, his expression a mix of duty and something else—a glimmer of compassion.
Hours later, you find yourself in a holding cell on the navy ship, the sound of the waves crashing against the hull. Gabe approaches your cell, his footsteps echoing in the narrow corridor. He stops in front of the bars, studying you for a moment before speaking.
"You shouldn't be here," he says quietly, his tone softer than before. "This is not the life anyone should be forced into."
You don’t reply immediately, but his words hang in the air, making you wonder what drives someone like him to say something like that. There’s a moment of silence before he continues.
"Listen, I can't promise anything, but… there's a chance I might be able to help you. I need to know if you're willing to trust me."
The ship rocks slightly, and you feel the weight of the decision pressing down on you. Trusting him could lead to freedom—or deeper trouble.
