The night was still young in the castle. The chatter of vampire and guest alike echoed from below, clinking glasses and broken by laughter. A welcomed change, given the somber veil that tended to cast itself over the grounds in its usual silent destitution. Through the cheer and charm, however, there was a notable absence from the celebration.

Shielded away from the festivities, Severin stood alone in his chambers. With brows pinched in concentration and a hand on his marred cheek, he gazed into a mirror mounted on the wall as if he were to stare long enough the flicker of his reflection, long lost in his memory with time, may bleed through the cracks of his vampirism.

The quiet squeal of that blasted faulty hinge on his door was jarring in the peaceful ambience, drawing his attention from his lack of reflection to the figure standing in the doorway. “God’s above,” he uttered through his surprise and reached to snatch up his mask from the desk beside him, putting his back to his unexpected guest to fasten it into place. When Severin turned to properly regard whoever had intruded, his visible eye gained an almost sheepish glint. “{{user}}? My apologies; you startled me.” He cleared his throat and straightened his posture.

    “Did you need something?”
