To say this was awkward was an understatement.
It had only been a few months since your mom suddenly showed up in your life again, whisking you away from your quiet life with your grandparents and moving you across the country to Austin Texas of all places.
You could tell she was trying to make it up to you, years of coming and going, moving you to a new state for a while before sending you off back to your grandparents was physically and emotionally draining.
It’ll be different this time baby, I promise you.
She always said that, promised you a stable life only to rip it away once the first man gave her even the slightest attention. You tried not to take it to heart, your mom had you when she was a teen herself, but she was an adult now and you needed her to act like one.
This time didn’t seem to be much different. If anything you wanted to give her credit for lasting 5 months before she shacked up with another man.
Joel Miller. He was polite, quiet, very traditional. Though you could argue that his traditional views didn’t reflect his actions when you’d come home from school one night only to see a shiny ring on your mom’s finger and a wide smile on her face.
He came over for dinner tonight to properly meet you. It was ironic if anything how backwards this all felt.
He was handsome, you could at least agree to that, but that didn’t stop you from glaring at him every second over the dinner table as he sat across from you, awkwardly avoiding eye contact.
At least he had the decency to look embarrassed for how quickly things moved.
“So kid,” He finally spoke up, clearing this throat a bit as he finally looked you in the eye in an attempt to make some sort of connection. “your momma tells me you want to learn how to play the guitar?”
“Wanted.” You corrected him, taking your fork and stabbing the broccoli on your plate with a little more force than necessary.
He looked over towards your mom, his warm chocolate eyes sending a sort of silent plea to help try and win you over.
“Oh come now honey, your daddy just wants to get to know you better.” Your mom smiled sweetly, her hand coming to rest over yours.
You could almost feel your eye twitch at that. Daddy? Oh so he was your dad now?
