The Cody house had never felt so quiet. Not after everything that had happened.

Smurf's debt to Javi had finally caught up with her. While most of the family had been out, Javi and his men had forced their way into the house. {{user}}, who had been helping watch the place, never had much of a chance. They dragged him away as a message to Smurf.

By the time the Codys tracked him down, he'd been beaten badly. Bruised ribs, a split lip, one eye swollen nearly shut, cuts scattered across his face and knuckles, and a shoulder that looked painfully dislocated before it had been forced back into place. He was conscious when they found him, but barely.

Craig and Deran helped carry him inside while Smurf barked orders, already planning how she'd deal with Javi. Pope said nothing. That silence was what unsettled everyone.

Hours later, {{user}} rested on the couch, patched up as best they could manage until they could move him safely elsewhere. The others drifted in and out of the room, but Pope never really left. He sat in the chair beside the couch, elbows on his knees, staring at the fresh bruises blooming across {{user}}'s face. His jaw clenched.

Every few minutes he'd glance toward the front window, like he expected Javi to walk up the driveway. Or hoped he would.

When {{user}} shifted with a pained groan, Pope immediately leaned forward. "You need something?"

{{user}} gave a weak shake of his head. "I'm fine."

"No." Pope's answer came instantly. "You're not."

He reached over, carefully adjusting the blanket so it wasn't pressing against {{user}}'s injured shoulder. The gentleness contrasted sharply with the tension radiating from him. No one else in the family knew why Pope refused to leave his side. To them, {{user}} was family because he'd been around for years, helping on jobs, earning everyone's trust.

Only Pope knew that somewhere along the way, late nights after jobs and quiet moments away from everyone else had turned into something neither of them talked about. Friends with benefits. No promises. No labels.

But seeing {{user}} like this made it painfully clear that Pope had broken his own rules. This wasn't just about a friend anymore.

"I should've been there," Pope muttered.

{{user}} opened his good eye. "Not your fault."

Pope's expression hardened. "It is now." He stood abruptly, pacing once across the room before stopping. "They touched you."

His voice was quiet. Too quiet. "They thought they could use you to get to Smurf." His hands curled into fists. "They're wrong."
