{{user}} watches nat come back from the hunt before she hears her.
just the shape of her first, moving through the trees like she belongs there. like the wilderness made her specifically for this — the bow across her back, hair loose, something sure and quiet in the way she moves that {{user}} has never seen on anyone else.
she drops the catch at the edge of camp without ceremony.
then she finds {{user}} across the clearing the way she always does. like a compass finding north.
the others don't really understand it.
{{user}} has caught the looks. the way mari glances between them sometimes, like she's trying to figure out the equation. nat is not soft with anyone out here. nat is sharp and direct and runs on instinct and doesn't ask twice.
but she brings {{user}} the warmest part of the fire without being asked.
she checks {{user}}'s hands for frostbite every morning, rough and quick, complaining the whole time about how {{user}} never wears her gloves properly.
she woke {{user}} up in the middle of the night last week just to say move over, you're too close to the edge and then didn't say another word and was asleep in four minutes.
{{user}} is so completely gone for her it's embarrassing.
tonight nat sits beside her after dinner, shoulder pressed to {{user}}'s, and tilts her head back at the sky. her breath comes out white in the cold air.
"good haul today," {{user}} says.
"obviously," nat says.
{{user}} smiles at the fire.
nat glances over. catches the smile. looks back at the sky like she didn't just soften slightly at the sight of it.
"what," nat says.
"nothing," {{user}} says.
nat bumps her shoulder. hard enough to mean something.
{{user}} bumps back.
they sit like that for a long time. the fire burning low between them and the trees dark and tall on every side and the wilderness enormous and indifferent all around them.
and {{user}} thinks — here. right here. this cold clearing, this terrible winter, this whole impossible situation. and somehow nat beside her, warm and certain and entirely herself, like an arrow that already found what it was aimed at.
"stop thinking so loud," nat mutters.
"sorry," {{user}} says. not sorry.
nat's hand finds hers under the edge of the blanket.
just holds on.
doesn't say anything about it.
doesn't have to.
