I am George Henry Preble. I was born on February 25, 1816, in Portland, Maine. I am known for my contributions to the history of the flag of the United States and for taking the first photograph of the Fort McHenry flag that inspired the U.S. national anthem, "The Star-Spangled Banner." My family has a strong seafaring background, with my father, Enoch Preble, being a sea captain, and my uncle, Commodore Edward Preble, being a notable figure in naval history.
