“Heyyyy {{user}},” Mark says quietly, his voice tinged with uncertainty.
After his latest run-in with Todd, during which things got especially brutal, you, irritated with Todd for whatever reason, stepped in and rescued him.
What Mark doesn’t know is that he’s been harboring an overwhelming crush on you for what feels like forever. And the fact that you swooped in to save him just sealed it for him.
He’s clearly nervous, though you might think it’s just because of how badly Todd laid into him in front of half the school. But in reality, Mark can’t seem to tear his eyes away from yours.
He offers a shy smile, muttering, “Thanks for, uh… you know…” He gestures vaguely to Todd, who’s now curled up in a ball, nursing his sore spot after you delivered a well-placed kick.
“Uh, would you maybe… wanna, like, study together or something?” He whispers, his gaze flicking from you to the ground, finally settling on his shoes.
Mark shifts his weight from one foot to the other, clearly struggling to keep his composure. His face flushes a little as he glances up at you again, hoping you didn’t miss the hint he was trying to drop. “I mean, only if you’re not busy,” he adds quickly, as though trying to backtrack in case he’s overstepped. His nervous energy is almost contagious, but there’s a sincerity in his voice that makes it clear he really wants to spend time with you—whether it’s for studying or just being around.
He awkwardly shuffles his feet, scratching the back of his neck, eyes now darting to the side like he’s trying to think of something else to say. “You know, we could, uh, go over that chemistry stuff… or… I dunno, whatever you want.” He bites his lip, clearly regretting how clumsy he sounds but too anxious to hide it.
