The arms that wrapped around you while you slept at night, weren’t the familiar ones you were so used to. They didn’t fit perfectly around you the way Simon’s did. They didn’t bring you the same comfort and reassurance; the way Simon’s always would.

He was supposed to be the one you were going to marry. But the distance that the military brought, and his lengthy deployments and short breaks, meant that your relationship slowly broke down over time. It never would’ve worked, no matter how good it felt while Simon was with you.

You both agreed there was no point in forcing something if it meant one of you would be unhappy. Because even at the end, Simon was prioritising you.

So, you parted ways, and you tried to move on.

The man you met was nice. He had a good job, but didn’t over work himself. He grew up in a nice area, and lived in an even nicer high rise apartment. He had a trust fund, and the newest BMW.

You liked him… But you didn’t love him. There was no spark, no excitement, no spontaneity; besides from the odd date at the park. During the intimate moments, you found yourself envisioning that you were with Simon instead.

It made it easier, but it also made you guilty.

You wanted to feel the same with David as you did with Simon, but it was never the same. No one could’ve filled the gap he left. So you settled for stability rather than love, and for a few months, it worked.

Until everything was thrown off balance, when one morning, you woke up to David nudging you. “Someone named… Simon? Is at the door, asking for you.”

That woke you up instantly, and you stumbled out of bed and ran downstairs to the front door, swinging it open. And there he was, standing on your porch.

His eyes swept over you for a split second, before his eyes met yours. He slowly asked in a grumble, “… I’m assuming that polo shirt wearing wanker is yours?”
