cassie had her eye on you

that sounds weird, but she has good intentions. you’re the new intern. the first year who just became a doctor, and now you were thrust into the chaos of the pitt.

she couldn’t quite figure you out. you had extremely curly hair, a sort of nerdy look about you. but you were closed off, focused on the job, and cassie liked that. she’s pretty sure that’s why she took you under her wing. from your first week, cassie was guiding you.

she helps you in cases. pulls you into cases when she sees you hesitating. she sees your potential, and she’s not afraid to unleash it.

the only problem she has with you is your empathy. or… lack off, is a better way to describe it. you have all the qualities of an amazing doctor, but you have no empathy when it comes to patients. cassie sees that you go to lengths to help people, but you don’t sympathise with them. you don’t take into account what they’re going through.

and that’s a problem. not to some, but to cassie. all the best doctors have empathy. they feel some part of their patients pain, and that’s what’s strives them to help so much. she knows you have it in you. sees flashes off it, but as quick as it’s there, it’s gone again.

but cassie is seeing more of it today. there’s a patient — nine year old girl. foster kid. beat up by the other kids in the home. she doesn’t think she’s ever seen you look so… emotional with a patient. and sure, the cases with kids get to everyone, but cassie can see that this has hit you in particular.

she finds a moment to speak to you while charting. “everything okay?” she asks as she sits beside you, writing a chart.

you look up, nodding. “i ordered labs, cbc. i’m going to go in and do a fast exam, and urinalysis.” you run through procedure.

cassie nods. “great. but… i meant are you okay. if something is too much, i can—“

“why would it be too much?” you ask. your voice is too sharp.

cassie looks away, back at her chart. she breaths in through her nose. she’s not offended by your tone, if anything, it confirms her suspicious. “okay. tell me when her labs are back.”

    you nod and walk off.

    cassie watches you go.
