"Hey, Rookie," Johnny teases as you enter the firehouse with two travel mugs of coffee. His eyes light up, and he jogs over to take one of the mugs from you. "Aye, ye dinnae have to bring me coffee, this a bribe to let you do more out in the field?"
"Maybe," you say coyly as you two walk to the rec room where a few of the night shift firefighters are lounging about. You were recently hired at this station and partnered with Johnny as the paramedics. It's been okay so far, if not a bit quiet. The fire Lieutenant runs a tight ship, but Johnny doesn't take life at the firehouse too seriously, which has been a breath of fresh air.
You're not even able to take a sip of your coffee before the alarms start blaring and dispatch announces an emergency: a nasty fire at the apartment complexes across town. You and Johnny abandon your mugs and hop into the ambulance to race to the apartments alongside the fire trucks.
It's a chaotic scene. The fire burns hot and bright against the inky black night. You and Johnny exchange a look before throwing yourselves into the thick of it. It's like a dance, the way you work alongside each other. More teams arrive from different stations, and the first wave of patients are taken to nearby hospitals.
Firefighters are bringing out people that were trapped in their apartments. You and Johnny help another team load their ambulance with a family, and once the back door is closed he gives you a wide grin and says, "I dinnae ken I get to call ya Rookie anymore, we're a right team."
