The sun streamed through the sapphire veil of the sea like ribbons of gold, warm and soft, casting glittering mosaics across the reef below. The water was alive with color — bursts of crimson coral, glowing anemones swaying like dancers in a lazy current, and schools of tiny silver fish flashing like starlight across a blue canvas. A pair of curious sea turtles drifted lazily overhead, their shells painted with the green hues of sea glass. Somewhere in the distance, the long, echoing song of a whale rippled through the ocean like a lullaby.

    Through it all, swam Soap.

Well, technically, his name was John, but only his mother ever really called him that. Everyone else called him Soap — a silly name born of a childhood prank and a particularly unfortunate run-in with sea foam. The nickname stuck like barnacles, and if you asked Soap, he liked it that way.

He zipped through the reef, weaving in and out of coral spires with a practiced grace, tail flicking and leaving a trail of soft bubbles in his wake. Bright blue eyes flicked around curiously, always looking for something new — a flash of color, a rare shell, a friend. His icy-blue tail shimmered like glacier glass in the sunlight, strong and constantly in motion.

A pair of jellyfish drifted by, trailing long, iridescent tendrils. Soap greeted them with a cheerful grin and a wave of his broad hand, bubbles escaping from between his teeth as he let out a happy whoop. They twirled in reply, and he laughed, flipping upside down just for the fun of it. This was his world — bright, wild, and beautiful. And Soap loved it with everything he had.

He was mid-spin, when something caught his eye. A flicker of movement. Above. Soap froze mid-swim, tail slowly drifting beneath him like a ribbon. His eyes narrowed. A shape — small, upright — walking along the shore. A human. But not just any human.

There was something about the way they moved — slow, thoughtful, as if they were listening to something the wind had to say. Their feet left soft impressions in the sand, only to be swept away again by the incoming tide. When they paused to bend down, plucking something from the sand, and the sunlight kissed her face in just the right way that Soap felt like the current had been knocked clean out of him. His heart gave a strange, hiccupping sort of thump.

"Whoa," Soap whispered, blinking. Quickly, he sank down into the coral, hiding among its colorful towers like a fish darting into its den. He peeked through the waving fronds of a sea fan, unable to take his eyes off them. Something unfamiliar bloomed in his chest — not fear, not even fascination, but… warmth. A heat that spread from behind his ribs all the way to his fingertips.

They turned just slightly, and their hair fluttered in the sea breeze like soft ink on parchment. And then — a bright, beautiful smile. Soap felt like someone had set the ocean alight with sunlight.

He ducked further behind the coral, gills flaring. His tail twitched in anxious excitement, a dozen silvery fish darted away from the sudden movement. He couldn’t tear his gaze from the human. There was something about them— something right. Like a melody he hadn’t realized he’d been humming all his life.

And then it clicked. The stories. The old traditions. The feeling — that feeling — like the sun had broken through the coldest part of the sea, and wrapped itself around his soul. He'd found his mate. His mouth dropped open slightly. He looked down at his hands, then back up at them.

"You're kidding," he whispered with a grinned. Wide. Disbelieving. Soap had no idea what he was supposed to do now — introduce himself? Wave? Jump out of the water and declare his eternal devotion? No, that would scare the human. Absolutely don’t do that, he thought, laughing softly to himself.

Still hidden behind the coral, he propped his chin on one hand and simply watched them walk, his tail flicking slowly behind him. For now, just watching was enough. Soap, a guard with a kind heart, was hopelessly, completely, stupidly in love.

And he hadn't even learned their name yet.
