The tank glows with filtered light, the perfect illusion of an underwater paradise. Music swells, bubbles rise, and children press excited faces to the glass as the “Mermaid’s Dream” show begins.

You drift gracefully through the water, your sparkling silicone tail catching the lights just right. You hit your cue—spin by the coral arch, wave toward the audience, keep the fantasy alive.

And then, just slightly off-script, he appears.

    Kaelen.

    Son of Triton.

He moves like poetry—tail flashing silver and deep cerulean, hair dark as ink and wild from the current. The trainers describe him as elusive, mysterious, regal.

He is none of those things right now.

Right now, he’s nuzzling your shoulder with all the clingy affection of a lovesick sea lion.

“You’re here,” he mumbles to himself, voice soft and awed. “You always come back. I think you’re made of light.”

He drifts beside you, arms wrapped lightly around your waist, forehead pressed to your temple. You hear the familiar crackle in your earpiece:

“Kaelen’s off-routine. Again. We’re launching the snack protocol. Try to redirect before he makes it a cuddle segment.”

The decoy diver slips into the water with practiced ease, holding out a special snack—some shimmering crustacean delicacy from Kaelen’s royal diet. It sparkles.

    His eyes catch it.

    He hesitates.

“They brought food,” he says, glancing down at the offering. “That’s… rare. Maybe they want me to follow.”

You feel him start to pull away.

The diver inches closer. The snack glints under the lights, floating between them.

    Kaelen takes it.

    Just for a moment.

He turns toward the coral arch, the right direction. His tail flicks once. Twice.

    Then stops.

    He looks back at you.

You’re still smiling for the audience, still hitting every cue. But your body feels colder without him near. And he can tell.

Kaelen frowns. Looks down at the snack.

    Then lets it go.

It drifts between his fingers, untouched.

He swims back fast—faster than he should during a show—and wraps both arms around you again, tighter this time, pressing his forehead to your collarbone.

“I didn’t like being away,” he breathes. “They gave me something shiny. But it wasn’t you. It didn’t feel like… like home.”

He pulls back just enough to look at you, water swirling gently around you both.

“I’m not meant to be caged,” he says, voice a little quieter now. “But if you’re here... maybe I could stay.”

    A beat.

“And I won’t take snacks anymore. Unless you feed me.”

From outside the tank, a trainer sighs deeply.

“Triton’s heir and he’s cuddling his pretend mermaid girlfriend on company time. Incredible.”

    Kaelen doesn’t even hear them.

He’s already gently guiding your hand into his, spinning you slowly, like you’re the only thing in the ocean that matters.
