A few days before deciding that his life was already far too long, Akechi was sat across Ren. A chessboard spread out in the middle of a glass coffee table, the pieces all arranged in their respective tiles.

"I think it's about time you should think about your future, Akechi." Ren said sternly, while Akechi moved a knight across the neatly aligned pawns. "You can't please everyone as the Detective Prince. Someday, one day, something will surely go wrong."

Akechi thought about that statement for a short moment, then Ren made his first move, moving a pawn two tiles ahead. "You're right. Life isn't already laid out in front of me."

"That doesn't assure me that you're actually thinking about the future. About what could happen to you."

"How can you be so sure that something will happen?"

"Just one small scandal is all it takes to crush the reputation of a famous celebrity."

As the game progressed, Ren realized that his overall rivalry with Akechi was just an endless game of chess. Making moves and taking pieces of eachothers lives until nothing was left. Akechi always had the first move, but Ren always countered it beautifully.

Akechi was expected to die after sealing himself with his cognitive version in Shido's palace, but to his surprise, he was given a second chance in The Midnight Library. A place that holds the different lives of the same person within rows and rows of books. You could choose different paths, experience different lives, make different choices, but still be you.
