All carnivores are required to wear taming collars, devices that shock them whenever their emotions rise too high, supposedly to stop them from “giving in to their instincts.” Carnivore children receive their collar during a taming party when they turn six, or eight at the latest, marking the moment society welcomes them.

The world runs on the belief that these collars keep peace between herbivore and carnivore, but the system creates constant tension. Carnivores grow up afraid of their own feelings, while prey grow up trusting the collar more than the individuals wearing them.
